‘Pac-Man Sun’: NASA Probe Sees Solar Eclipse in Space
A NASA spacecraft has captured stunning footage of Tuesday’s (Feb. 21) partial solar eclipse, which left our star looking briefly like a huge celestial Pac-Man.
NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) was watching Tuesday morning when the new moon crossed part of the sun’s face in a partial eclipse that was visible only from space. SDO snapped a video and photos of the solar eclipse from its lofty perch 22,000 miles (36,000 kilometers) above Earth.
“It’s a PacMan sun! The moon is transiting between @NASA_SDO and the sun today!” SDO officials wrote Tuesday in a post to @Camilla_SDO, the mission’s mascot Twitter account, referring to the circular video game hero that chows down on ghosts and dots.
The partial solar eclipse provided more than just pretty pictures, however. During its travels, the moon briefly blocked sunspot AR1422, an active region that is blasting strong ultraviolet emissions into space.

another crazy dream
this one is far less detailed is pretty damn detailed (but i hadn’t remembered half the dream until i began writing it) than my previous entries as this one happened in the middle of the night and i only just had a deja vu moment that brought back some minor details.
For one thing, the dream takes place durring an ireland vaction with faceless buddies. At one point im in line to take an old wooden boat across an unnamed body of water. Im inside a cross between a dive bar and a disney world waiting line (indoors, wooden, dark, and stansions directing people to the front of the line) when i see my childhood best friend Paul. Hes there there with his new friends from work and manhattan and its an awkward meeting filled with looks away and “how ya been”s.
After me and my pals cross the river we cross paths with some undesireables and talk of a fight comes up.
(this next part i cant seem to remember why exactly but i wanted to kill this one man. He was threatening something important to me. what? i cant recall.)
The plan was (and this is now where im remembering some people in my dream) for me and my childhood neighbor Evan to surprise him and hold him by the wrists, while my current pal Joe knocks him to the ground and from there wed all be pummeling him.
However, dreams are dreams and they are ever changing. So…getting out of the pasenger seat of a sedan, at night, I reach for my pocket knife (knowing ill see this man soon) but I cant find it. A faceless bud of mine lends me a long army knife that looks more like a cheap asian fan. im trying to get it to spring open but the point keeps flopping down and it wont work until finaly the sides come out and the things keeps opening and changing like a transformer until its this this huge sword and sheild connected to each other.
So now I have this massive weapon and its damn heavy (but cool as hell). I can still see it in my head. it was white with black lines on it where ever it was supposed to have clicked together.
now….I never get to use this bohemoth on the SOB like i wanted to…no. No, instead I see that theres a box on the back of this long wide sword. There’s a box a little smaller than a shoebox, and I open it (scenery had changed around me as I opened it. Im in a kitchen, at a table). Inside the box are two miniature babies. One is obviously a girl, who needs to be wiped, and the other is less obviously a boy. why? i dunno. It was weird. Im my dream I remember accepting that I’d care for them, and thats where the dream ends.
Other quick dream.
watching the dark knight rises on hbo on a tiny tv and its sucks and after the first hr i cant finish it due to someone watching something else on tv and i freak out, but it sucked anyway, and i dont want my sister to know cause im supposed to watch it with her.
Life Discovered On Dead Hydrothermal Vents
Scientists at USC have uncovered evidence that even when hydrothermal sea vents go dormant and their blistering warmth turns to frigid cold, life goes on.
Or rather, it is replaced.
A team led by USC microbiologist Katrina Edwards found that the microbes that thrive on hot fluid methane and sulfur spewed by active hydrothermal vents are supplanted, once the vents go cold, by microbes that feed on the solid iron and sulfur that make up the vents themselves.
The findings — based on samples collected for Edwards by the U.S. Navy deep sea submersible Alvin (famed for its exploration of the Titanic in 1986) — provide a rare example of ecological succession in microbes.
The findings were published in an mBio article authored by Edwards, USC postdoctoral researcher Jason Sylvan and Brandy Toner of the University of Minnesota.
Ecological succession is the biological phenomenon whereby one form of life takes the place of another as conditions in an area change — a phenomenon documented in plants and animals.
